Book review - The Time Paradox

by Dr Philip Zimbardo and John Boyd

These two brilliant gentlemen hail from Stanford University.  Dr Philip Zimbardo is in fact Professor Emeritus of Psychology.  It is fantastic to find a book where our relationship with time is tackled by these two experts.

The Time Paradox is a very unconventional time management book.  It examines your 'time orientations' of which there are six, and provides guidelines to developing a healthier relationship with time.  When viewed in this context, addressing our time biases can be regarded as an essential therapeutic tool.

The Time Paradox experiments have been conducted worldwide using over 100 000 volunteers.  Dr Zimbardo's psychology of time is certainly challenging conventional time management beliefs and techniques.

Of especial interest was the section on overcoming one's past negative experiences resulting in a negative past time orientation.  People with positive past orientations appear to be few and far between, yet a strong foundation has been shown to increase overall happiness and provide a stabilising factor in one's life.  Zimbardo and Boyd provide tools for 'reframing' a negative past and creating a positive one right now.

The Time Paradox is a fascinating read for anyone who wishes to understand how our relationship with time affects just about everything we do.

The Time Clinic rates The Time Paradox 9/10, an entertaining, fascinating and inspirational read for sure!
